The Sampler and Siphon Starter
This is our design for a sampler jar. With this simple device you can safely extract a sample, for hydrometer testing or tasting, from any fermenting vessel. If you brew, you already own most of the parts. Drill two holes in a solid stopper as shown. Use a plastic hydrometer jar (about $3.00) for the sampler. Suck on the short rigid tube to start the syphon. There is no danger of contamination, since the beer or wine never touches the suction tube that you've put your mouth on. With a cool homemade device like this one, you will be encouraged to take more hydrometer readings, and thereby improve your brewing!
*Our dear friend Jim Thoms; homebrewer, artist and all around genius, did the artwork.*
